Jet skis run on the Guatapé reservoir and they are one of the fastest ways to get out on the water. Here is what to expect, what to check before you pay, and how to get the best conditions of the day.
What riding here is like
The Peñol-Guatapé reservoir is sheltered freshwater with no swell, which makes it far more forgiving than the sea. There is a lot of open water and the scenery is the point: the Peñón on one side, green hills and inlets everywhere else.
Best time of day
Mornings are flattest. Wind builds through the day and the surface gets choppy by mid-afternoon, which on a jet ski means a wetter, rougher ride. Boat traffic also rises through the day, so early is both calmer and safer. If you can be on the water by eight, do that.
What to check before you ride
- A life jacket for every rider, not just the driver
- Whether a guide goes with you or you ride alone
- What happens if the machine has a problem away from the dock
- Whether fuel is included or billed afterwards
- Whether insurance covers you or only the machine
These are normal questions. A good operator answers them without hesitating.
Jet ski or towed sports?
A jet ski is a driving experience: you control the machine. If what you actually want is speed on the water with someone else driving, the towed sports are a different kind of fun and usually cheaper per person, because the whole group shares one boat and takes turns. Wakeboarding, waterskiing, kneeboarding and tubing all run from Marina Navegar with an instructor and all the gear included.
Plenty of groups do both: an hour behind the boat, then a jet ski afterwards.
